  4. FUNET, the Finnish University and Research Network, is a project estabilished
  5. in 1984 by the Ministry of Education.  FUNET provides Internet-connectivity to
  6. the academic and research community.  The network is based on cisco
  7. multiprotocol routers with redundant leased line topology from 64 kbit/s to
  8. 2 Mbit/s which will be replaced by public Frame Relay service during the spring
  9. 1992.  The supported protocols are TCP/IP, NJE, DECNET and OSI CLNS.  In
  10. co-operation with Telecom Finland three single mode fiber FDDI rings
  11. interconnecting FUNET sites have been installed. FUNET operates various
  12. application level gateways and services including the largest public archive
  13. server nic.funet.fi in the Internet.

  15. The Finnish Unix Users' Group, FUUG, provides EUnet mail and news access to
  16. commercial companies and colleges.  The connections are mostly UUCP connections
  17. using high-speed dial-up modems and ISDN.  InterEUnet TCP/IP services will be
  18. available using leased lines and dial-up connections in January 1992.  FUUG has
  19. an agreement with FUNET to utilize the FUNET IP backbone for national
  20. connectivity.

  22. Both FUNET and FUUG use the Nordic University and Research Network, NORDUnet,
  23. for their main international connectivity.
